1ペトロの手紙が送られたときに、小アジアのクリスチャンたちは、いつまで続くのか分からないような辛い試練の中にありました。特に、「クリスチャン特有の苦難」です。たとえば・・・

「・・・いわば旅人であり、仮住まいの身なのですから、・・・異教徒の間で立派に生活しなさい。そうすれば、彼らはあなたがたを悪人呼ばわりしてはいても、あなたがたの立派な行いをよく見て、訪れの日に神をあがめるようになります。」

（１ペトロ2:11～12）

「かつてあなたがたは、異邦人が好むようなことを行い、好色、情欲、泥酔、酒宴、暴飲、律法で禁じられている偶像礼拝などにふけっていたのですが、もうそれで十分です。あの者たちは、もはやあなたがたがそのようなひどい乱行に加わらなくなったので、不審に思い、そしるのです。」（1ペトロ4:3～4）

私たちの人生にも、イエス様を信ずるがゆえに、いろいろと馬鹿にされたりとか、誤解を受けたりとか、あるいは本当に迫害を受けたりとか、家族からも見放されたりとか、そういった苦難を経験するということが、起こってくることがあります。けれども、この手紙を通して読んでみると、どうも彼らが試練の中で、自暴自棄になっているような様子はない。悲観的なムードは漂っていないのです。逆に、どうも試練の中で、喜びに満ち溢れている。希望に満ち溢れている様子がわかります。

6節　「あなたがたは、心から喜んでいるのです」

8節   「言葉では言い尽くせないすばらしい喜びに満ちあふれています。」

一体、苦難の中での、彼らのこの希望はどこから来ていたのか。喜びの根拠はどこにあったのでしょうか。

“The Church in Exile: An Infinite Hope (1)”

1 Peter 1:1-9

When the Epistle of 1 Peter was sent, Christians in Asia Minor were in a hard trial that seemed like it would last forever. Christians meeting in small house churches were surrounded by neighbors and even family members who scorned their beliefs and their morality. This happened because they believed in Jesus. For example…

“… as foreigners and exiles, … Live such good lives among the pagans that, though they accuse you of doing wrong, they may see your good deeds and glorify God on the day he visits us.” (1 Peter 2:11-12)

“For you have spent enough time in the past doing what pagans choose to do—living in debauchery, lust, drunkenness, orgies, carousing and detestable idolatry. They are surprised that you do not join them in their reckless, wild living, and they heap abuse on you.” (1 Peter 4:3-4)

It is the same in our lives today: there are times when others look down on us, or misunderstand us, and sometimes we are persecuted, even to the point that our family and friends turn their back on us. However, as we read though this letter, we find that this letter is not a lament, but filled with joy. These are words of celebration. Before any advice is given in the epistle, Peter reminds the readers of their hope. The suffering, the trials, and the discrimination are only one minor chord in this epistle, for the major theme is the hope that places suffering in perspective.

So, why is that? In trials, where does this hope come from? Where is the foundation of joy?
